FEATURE: UTEP-bound Matlock has developed into a triple-threat weapon for Brock

BROCK — Ask Brock two-way senior Colt Matlock which position he prefers to play — wide receiver or safety — and he may have to think it over for a while.

Ask the Brock coaching staff where the 18-year-old is better-suited to play and you may find yourself waiting again.

The final say might be determined by the coaching staff of the University of Texas at El Paso, where Matlock has committed to play beginning next season. At present, the Miners plan to use him as a safety. But the option of using him at receiver or as a weapon on special teams will always be there.

BIG COUNTRY PREPS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Tolar quarterback takes the top spot

Since losing their season opener to Peaster (34-0), the Tolar Rattlers (2-1) have not only managed to improve, but they’re rapidly gaining momentum to go with that progress.

Our Big Country Preps Player of the Week, Briton Rice, is a part of that, having thrown for 197 yards and four scores in last week’s 42-18 win over Millsap. This, after missing a week with an injury.

BIG COUNTRY PREPS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Big Spring quarterback takes the top spot

Our Big Country Preps Player of the Week is seldom an easy choice and this week was no exception. But Big Spring senior quarterback Marcus Rios had the numbers to snag the top spot in a brilliant performance against Lubbock High on Friday.

Rios hit 11 of 19 throws for 261 yards and four touchdowns in a 41-27 win. But that’s just the beginning.

BIG COUNTRY PREPS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Comanche senior crosses 500-kill milestone while helping CHS to tourney win

Photo provided by Randy Day

Milestones catch our eye when selecting our Big Country Preps Player of the Week, as do great weekly performances. But when both occur at the same time, you can rest assured that player will be in the running for the top spot.

This week the spotlight goes to Comanche senior outside hitter J’Lee Salinas, who not only helped the Maidens to the Heart of Texas Tournament Championship in Brownwood, but she also hit the 500-kill milestone in process.

EVAN REN: Brock’s success is virtually perpetual and there’s no end in sight

BROCK — It is hard to fail at something when you have a good belief system in place, a good work ethic, support from friends, family and your entire community, and an attitude that failure is unacceptable.

That applies to virtually any endeavor, whether it be an individual or team effort. So when trying to explain the perpetual success of the Brock football team or of its entire athletic program, it’s really not that complicated.

2025 BROCK FOOTBALL PREVIEW: Young talent should keep Brock’s ship on an even keel

BROCK — With only seven of 22 starters back from a year ago, one’s first inclination may be to say that the Brock Eagles will be taking a step back from last year’s 13-2 squad.

Hold that thought.

The reality is, the Eagles have 18 returning lettermen who saw significant playing time last year. They also have several promoted players from a 9-1 JV team to bolster this year’s varsity roster. In short, Brock will again be fielding a top-10 caliber team with a deep postseason push in mind.

  • ALL BIG COUNTRY PREPS SOFTBALL: First-Team Selections
  • ALL BIG COUNTRY PREPS SOFTBALL: Second-Team Selections (plus honorable mention)

Our All-Big Country Preps Softball and Baseball Teams, released Saturday and Sunday, respectively, are in place to honor those who achieved the most on-field success in 2025. It is off the field, however, where character, grit, and work ethic are often measured. And it is with our Big Country Preps All-Hustle Team that we wish to honor those players, male and female, who were (simply put) the hardest-working, best teammates in the area this spring.

This team isn’t about who the best baseball and softball players were.

The All-Hustle team honors effort, discipline, toughness, coachability and selflessness — traits that coaches wish they had in every player and upon which championships are built.

It is for that reason that this team is largely selected by area coaches and described in their own words.

Big Country Preps is now honored to present these individuals to you — the best team players (boys and girls) that the Big Country had to offer during the 2025 season.

The players below are listed in no particular order.

GAME REPORT: Brock’s season ends with Game 2 loss to Longview Spring Hill

DALLAS — One night after seeing a 5-2 lead slip away in a Game 1, 7-6 loss in eight innings, the Brock Eagles suffered another heartbreaker at the hands of Longview Spring Hill, falling 2-0 in Game 2 of a 4A DII state semifinal on Friday at Dallas Baptist University.

Landon Bartell tossed a complete-game two-hit shutout and Cayson Wilkins was 2-for-2 with an RBI and one run scored to lead Spring Hill (33-7), which now advances to the state championship game.

GAME STORY: Brock downs district mate Graham 7-0 in one-game region final to earn state semis bid

STEPHENVILLE — Facing off with a familiar opponent in a one-game playoff for the Region I-4A Division II championship and trip to the state semifinals, Brock coach Koby Page was a bundle of nerves heading into Thursday’s matchup with Graham at the Tarleton Baseball Complex.

If his Eagles shared that nervousness, they didn’t show it, using a three-run third inning to take a lead that ace Evan O’Connor would protect the rest of the way in a 7-0 victory over their District 6-4A rival.

The win, which was punctuated by a second three-run outburst in the top of the seventh, earns Brock another week of baseball against the winner of the Region II-4A Div. II championship series between Carthage and Longview Spring Hill.

GAME STORY: Brock remains unbeaten with 13-inning marathon victory over Levelland to win 4A DII bi-district series

EULA — To get past a difficult Levelland team in their Class 4A DII bi-district series, the Brock Lady Eagles had very little margin for error. In fact, through Friday’s 2-1 win in Game 1 and Saturday’s 7-6 win in 13 innings, Brock played error-free softball to advance to the area round.

Twenty full innings without a single miscue.

Mylee Cedillo was 6 of 7 with a triple, an RBI and two runs scored (including the 13th inning game-winner) while freshman phenom Ali Coleman went the distance in the circle to lead the top-ranked and still-unbeaten Lady Eagles (27-0-2), who will face Burkburnett in the area round next Friday and Saturday in Graham.

Levelland closed its season at 28-6-1, led by Saydi Mendez, who was 6 of 7 with a triple and two RBIs.

“We had to play that way to win,” said Brock coach Greg Connors of his team’s fielding perfection — knowing full well that fifth-ranked Levelland would be a handful.

BIG COUNTRY PREPS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Wall’s Jones holds down the top spot yet again

At Big Country Preps, we pride ourselves on sharing the love as much as possible. But Wall senior Briggs Jones has been so spectacular of late, that he’s making that difficult.

Jones has not only taken our Big Country Preps Player of the Week for a second straight time, but for a third time this year and a fourth time in his athletic career.

CLASS 4A REGIONAL TRACK ROUNDUP: Brownwood girls take team title, area athletes earn 23 medals at I-4A meet

LUBBOCK — The Brownwood girls won a team title and Stephenville finished second behind Canyon on the boys side over the weekend to headline a strong effort by programs and athletes from the Big Country Preps coverage area at the Region I-4A track meet.

The Lady Lions earned 113 points to run away from the competition at Lowrey Field, topping second-place Canyon by 38 points and third-place Canyon Randall by 53. The Stephenville boys, meanwhile, finished with 76 points to fall 15 shy of Canyon for the team championship.

Those efforts highlighted a successful meet that saw area athletes claim 23 total medals — 13 on the girls side and 10 on the boys.

GAME STORY: Brock shuts out Mineral Wells behind masterpiece from Evan O’Connor

MINERAL WELLS — With a raucous Mineral Wells crowd aiming a wide variety of noise makers (including duck calls) at him, Brock’s Evan O’Connor had an effective countermeasure: pure heat.

With first place in District 6-4A DI in the balance, O’Connor unleashed one of the most dominant performances the Big Country Preps coverage area has seen this year with a one-hit, 6-0 victory at Pratt Field.

Consistently hitting the radar gun at 91 mph and pegging it at 92, the junior southpaw fanned 16 Mineral Wells hitters against only two walks and limited the Rams to a second-inning infield hit by Curry Crouch.

BIG COUNTRY PREPS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Wall’s Jones takes the award with spectacular effort at area meet

The best way to describe the area meet performance of our Big Country Preps Player of the Week (Wall’s Briggs Jones) is to simply let his coach, Craig Slaughter do the talking.

“He ran a blistering 10.41 to set a school record and win the 100 meters,” Slaughter said. “He broke his long jump record with a jump of 23-11.5. I only let him jump twice because he was running out of room in the pit and I need that dude cranked up this week.

“Then he destroyed his triple jump record with a jump of 48-7.25

BIG COUNTRY PREPS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Cisco junior takes the top spot with no-hitter

While no-hitters are fairly common at the high school level, the bulk of them are of the five-inning variety — ending early while locking down a mercy rule win.

Going the full seven innings without allowing a hit, however, is much less common. And in the case of Cisco junior Case Williams, his seven-inning no-no in a 2-0 win over a good Coleman team last Tuesday secured our Big Country Preps Player of the Week for the Week ending April 5.

BIG COUNTRY PREPS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Wall’s Briggs Jones takes the top spot

After nursing a sore back which prevented him from jumping for a few weeks, Wall senior Briggs Jones made a return to the stage in a big way last week.

Competing in Wall’s very own Cotton Patch Relays, Jones took five gold medals, winning the long jump, triple jump, 100 meters, 200 meters and yet another with the 800 relay team.
