CAPITAL FARM CREDIT/BCP PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Dublin’s Chris Teten snags our first award of the school year
Prior to the season, we listed Dublin’s Chris Teten among our Top 10 area quarterbacks to watch in 2021. And he wasted no time in demonstrating why.
Only a junior, Teten threw for 310 yards and five scores in a 43-14 win over area rival De Leon to capture our first Capital Farm Credit/Big Country Preps Player of the Week award for the 2020-21 school year.
Hitting 16 of 26 throws, Teten threw a 69-yard TD pass on the first play from scrimmage, setting the tone for the rest of the evening. With the game in hand, he played a little more than a half before being taken out.
District 2-3A Div. II Week 1 Report: Bulldogs crush TLCA in season-opening win.
Brady 37, San Angelo TLCA 6 — Brady had an easy time with TLCA, finishing with 454 total yards, including 367 on the ground. 
JD Ibarra was the top scorer for BHS, with 175 yards rushing on 18 carries and three touchdowns. Hayden Baronet threw for 87, rushed for 172 and accounted for two scores.

The 2021 football season has arrived, giving us a much-needed diversion every Friday night, in isolated spots all over Central Texas. As always, I will endeavor to pick the winner of all our area games, from Class 1A through Class 6A, with the top matchup serving as our Big Country Preps Game of the Week.
Our first spotlight game should come as no surprise, with long-time Hamlin coach Russell Lucas debuting as the head coach of the Sweetwater Mustangs — one of the most -storied programs in the Big Country.
Their opposition?
The Stephenville Yellow Jackets at Tarleton State’s Memorial Stadium.

EVAN REN: The top area games worth traveling to in 2021
Every year, one of the things I look forward to most, is mapping out the upcoming football season — charting the games I believe will have the greatest impact.
First and foremost, it’s a preseason menu for area fans who enjoy driving to some of the Big Country’s best football games on a weekly basis. Call it a football roadmap of sorts.
BRADY FEATURE: Deep, talented lines ready to move pile in 2021
BRADY — If it’s true that strong line play is the foundation of a successful football team, the Brady Bulldogs should be building from a solid slab in 2021.
Blessed with an ample supply of talent, size, depth and experience, BHS coach Shay Easterwood is in the best shape he’s been up front since taking over the Bulldogs program in 2017.
And coming off back-to-back playoff appearances for the first time since Brady reached the postseason in four straight years from 2013-16, Easterwood and his squad are hoping to turn that potential advantage in the trenches into BHS’ first winning season since 2015.
2021 BRADY FOOTBALL PREVIEW: Bulldogs equipped for breakout season in 2021
BRADY —Shay Easterwood’s first four years as the Brady football coach have seen the Bulldogs make quiet progress, culminating in playoff berths each of the past two seasons. But BHS is still in search of its first winning season since 2015.
With 16 lettermen back from last year’s squad, including eight returning starters of both sides of the ball, the Bulldogs expect to change
that this fall.
Buoyed by 1,000-yard back JD Ibarra and a deep and talented line, the Brady offense should challenge the 2019 unit as the best Easterwood has fielded thus far. And an experienced defense appears poised to continue the steady growth pattern that’s marked the past four years.
If everything goes to plan, the Bulldogs could be looking at a true breakout year in what appears to be a wide-open District 2-3A Division II race.

We’ll be releasing our Big Country Preps Preseason Football Preview, the most comprehensive look at the upcoming Big Country football season anywhere, on Saturday, Aug. 14. But you won’t have to wait until then to sate your gridiron appetite.
Leading up to the first day of fall football practice on Aug. 2, we’ll be spotlighting each 11-man team in the area and posing some of the key questions they’ll face in 2021 as part of our annual “Countdown to Two-a-Days” series.
Today, we stay Class 3A Division II with the Brady Bulldogs. On Wednesday, we will take a look at the Coahoma Bulldogs, followed by the Comanche Indians on Thursday.

Having already released our picks for the girls state track meet earlier this evening, we now present the boys event, using the same approach.
We’ll comb through each event involving a Big Country athlete (or athletes) and assess if they are favorites, dark horses or long shots to get on the medal stand.

I don’t care who you are — even if you’re a non-fan when it comes to track and field.
The excitement of the state meet in Austin will capture your attention if you catch sight or sound of it. It’s inescapable.
And once per year, it is my pleasure to examine the multitude of Big Country athletes heading to Austin for the event and pick who we can expect to see on the medal stand from our area.
Let’s begin with the girls side, looking at each event in which a Big Country athlete has qualified for state.

CAPITAL FARM CREDIT/BCP PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Clyde’s Phillips earns this week’s spotlight
In a week filled with unforgettable moments, several of our nominees handed in by area coaches could justifiably be called our Capital Farm Credit/BCP Player of the Week.
We finally settled on Clyde sophomore Payton Phillips, who stunned attendees at the Region I-3A meet by taking gold in both the long jump (18 feet, 6 inches) and the 100 hurdles (15.12) — breaking school records that were 25 and 15 years old, respectively.

CAPITAL FARM CREDIT/BCP PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Escalon takes this week’s accolade
Our Big Country Preps Player of the Week for the Week ending April 17 could have only been better had he thrown a no-hitter.
Breckenridge freshman Camden Escalon came within one hit of a no-no on Saturday in an 18-0 rout of Wichita Falls City view.
Along the way he fanned 10 hitters against only two walks to improve his personal record to 2-0 on the year.
As a team Breckenridge enters this week at 13-6 and 6-3 in district play.

GAME STORY: Whitehead, Merkel dominate Brady to clinch at least share of 6-3A title
MERKEL — Josie Whitehead pitched a five-inning one hitter and her teammates pounded out 16 hits Tuesday as the Merkel Lady Badgers shut out Brady 14-0 at home to claim at least a share of the District 6-3A title.
Whitehead was perfect after a one-out double in the first, retiring the final 14 batters she faced, including 10 of the final 12 batters by strikeout.
And while the freshman right-hander was dealing in the circle, the Lady Lady Badger lineup was lighting things up at the plate, following a four-run first with a seven-run second to put the game out of reach early.
