BIG COUNTRY PREPS GAME OF THE WEEK: Steers plays host to Littlefield, Gramps Ren rebounds (w/ Evan Ren’s Big Country Picks)

After a disastrous night of picking football games on Sept. 19 that saw his season percentage dip below .800, Gramps Ren has rebounded. Thank you, thank you. 

Last Friday saw this column hit with more than 88 percent accuracy on games throughout the Big Country, pulling its season percentage to an even .800 as we hit the season’s midpoint. 

This week I’ll be heading west — way West — to the very edge of our coverage area to get a first-hand look at the Big Spring Steers in their matchup with Littlefield in our Big Country Preps Game of the Week.

DISTRICT 2-3A Div. II Week 5 Report: Ballinger wins thriller in overtime over Llano

Ballinger 35, Llano 34, OT — Carter Arrott threw for 208 yards and two scores and Beau Perkins rushed for 117 yards to lift Ballinger to a thrilling OT win at home.

The Bearcats (3-1) trailed 3-0 after one quarter, 9-7 at the break and 15-13 after three quarters, but took a 28-21 lead with 3:33 to play after Arrott scored on a 1-yard run.

BIG COUNTRY PREPS GAME OF THE WEEK: Jim Ned, Snyder clash in battle of unbeatens (w/ Evan Ren’s Big Country picks)

LAST WEEK: 36-16, .692
OVERALL: 163-46, .779

After four straight weeks of picking 80 percent or better, the USS Ren ran aground last Friday, bottoming out with a season-low .692 percentage and dropping my season tally to .779.

I generally like to be above 80 percent by midseason, so last Friday served as a wakeup call. Actually, it was more of a gut punch. But I’ll get over it.

This week’s Big Country Preps Game of the Week will see me traveling to Snyder, where the unbeaten Class 4A Tigers will play host to 3A DI state champion Jim Ned in what should be an absolutely electric atmosphere.

BIG COUNTRY PREPS GAME OF THE WEEK: Brady cancels, Ren goes scrambling (w/ Evan Ren’s Big Country Picks)

LAST WEEK: 42-9, .823

I was very much looking forward to our Big Country Preps Game of the Week – Coleman (2-0) at Brady (2-0). Unfortunately, COVID intervened by midweek, forcing a cancellation of the contest.

On a positive note, there are several other quality games throughout the area for us to focus on, and (taking a bow) the column is already hitting over 80 percent on picks and we’re only in Week 3.

Numbers of that sort are generally reserved for Weeks 7-10, so I’m feeling pressure to keep the early momentum going.

In the absence of our Game of the Week, I’ll be heading to Cross Plains on Friday, where Haskell will be paying a visit to the Buffaloes (COVID allowing, of course).

District 2-3A Div. II Report: Week 2: Brady improves to 2-0 with road win over Comanche

Brady 46, Comanche 19 — JD Ibarra rushed for 239 yards and three scores on just 21 carries to help Brady to a win on the road.

Zeke Jones added 142 yards rushing and an additional score and quarterback Hayden Baronet found the end zone three times (despite finishing with one yard on 12 carries) to lift Brady (2-0).

District 2-3A Div. II Week 1 Report: Bulldogs crush TLCA in season-opening win.

Brady 37, San Angelo TLCA 6 — Brady had an easy time with TLCA, finishing with 454 total yards, including 367 on the ground. 

JD Ibarra was the top scorer for BHS, with 175 yards rushing on 18 carries and three touchdowns. Hayden Baronet threw for 87, rushed for 172 and accounted for two scores.

At last, here we are. 

The 2021 football season has arrived, giving us a much-needed diversion every Friday night, in isolated spots all over Central Texas. As always, I will endeavor to pick the winner of all our area games, from Class 1A through Class 6A, with the top matchup serving as our Big Country Preps Game of the Week.

Our first spotlight game should come as no surprise, with long-time Hamlin coach Russell Lucas debuting as the head coach of the Sweetwater Mustangs — one of the most -storied programs in the Big Country.

Their opposition?

The Stephenville Yellow Jackets at Tarleton State’s Memorial Stadium.

Every year, one of the things I look forward to most, is mapping out the upcoming football season — charting the games I believe will have the greatest impact.

BANGS FEATURE: Dragons’ Santillanes accepts new role as a senior

BANGS — Damien Santillanes was the student last season as an underclassman receiver and linebacker on a senior-laden Bangs Dragons football team. This year, as one of only five Bangs players with significance varsity experience, Santillanes has switched roles to that of teacher.

“The last couple of years, I had older guys to set us straight. I know good people taught me,” said Santillanes, a third-year starter. “Now, I’m one of the guys helping the younger players get on the right path.

“Most of our new guys are up from the JV last year. We talk to them about the faster tempo on the varsity level and about how there will be a lot more fans at the games now. We tell them to focus on doing their job and don’t worry about the fast tempo or the bigger crowds.”

2021 BANGS PREVIEW: Dragons hope ‘residue’ from 2020 aides rebuilding

BANGS — Residue – a small amount of something that remains after the main part has gone – is not a common word in a Texas high school coach’s vocabulary. It’s more of a science word.

But fourth-year Bangs head coach Kyle Maxfield used “residue” when analyzing how his Dragons could be District 2-3A Division II contenders again despite returning just four offensive and three defensive starters from last year’s 9-2 team.

“I’m sure we’ll have some growing pains because of our inexperience,” Maxfield said. “But when I’ve had teams in the past that made a good run, there’s a residue that remains there for the players coming back to build from. That’s a lot better situation to be in than starting over from scratch.”

COUNTDOWN TO TWO-A-DAYS: Bangs Dragons

Football is just around the corner, and we at BigCountryPreps.com are committed to bringing you the information you need to prepare for your favorite team’s season.

We’ll be releasing our Big Country Preps Preseason Football Preview, the most comprehensive look at the upcoming Big Country football season anywhere, on Saturday, Aug. 14. But you won’t have to wait until then to sate your gridiron appetite.

Leading up to the first day of fall football practice on Aug. 2, we’ll be spotlighting each 11-man team in the area and posing some of the key questions they’ll face in 2021 as part of our annual “Countdown to Two-a-Days” series.

Today, we stay in Class 3A Division II with the Bangs Dragons. On Tuesday, we will take a look at the Brady Bulldogs, followed by the Coahoma Bulldogs on Wednesday.

GAME STORY: Swearingin, Bowie shut down Bangs in series opener

Bowie starter Kawlyer Swearingin was too much for the Bangs Dragons on Friday, tossing a complete-game shutout at McMurry University’s Walt Driggers Field to fuel the Jackrabbits to a 9-0 win in the first game of a best-of-three Region I-3A bi-district series.

The lefty pitched around four hits and three walks with the aid of 10 strikeouts, allowing his team to break a close game open with a pair of big innings.

The first of those came in the bottom of the fourth, when Bowie took advantage of a balk and two errors to plate three runs, and the second came two innings later, when the Jackrabbits pushed four runs across to all but seal the victory.

The outcome leaves Bangs (14-12-1) in need of two wins Saturday to extend its season to the area round next week.
