Stamford 48, Hamlin 6 — Kaston Vega rushed for 120 yards and three scores and Cle Whitfield rushed for 100 yards and another score to lead Stamford to a big win in the return of coach Wayne Hutchinson.
Stamford outgained Hamlin 417-110 while forcing the Pied Pipers into a pair of turnovers.

As Anson prepares for the 2023 football season, the most pressing challenge facing the Tigers is how quickly they can get back to the playoffs.
The answer very well could be this year, especially considering that “fast” has been the buzzword around the Tiger camp throughout the workouts leading to the team’s Aug. 25 season opener against Seymour.
That’s “fast,” as in, “Those Anson kids look pretty fast this year.”
At this juncture a year ago, Anson was preparing to open the football season with a new coach and a new staff — and it was doing it with a mere eight returning lettermen and three previous starters from the 2021 campaign.
Not surprisingly, the Tigers didn’t get to do much roaring en route to a 2-8 record.
Fast forward to this fall, and you can take that “new” label off of the coach, Cory McCombs, who, prior to becoming the head coach at Anson, had accumulated a 12-8 coaching record. The bottom line: He has shown that he knows how to build a winning team.

Coming off a bi-district sweep of Plainview in which Reese Farrar and Rylee Moore both pitched five-inning one-hitters, it was going to be difficult for Wylie’s co-aces to repeat that performance against El Paso Parkland in the area round.
And yet, they did.
Farrar pitched her second one-hitter of the playoffs while Moore tossed a five-inning no-hitter to fuel the Lady Bulldogs past the Lady Matadors 20-1 and 10-0 and into the Region I-4A quarterfinals, where WHS (30-6) will face off with 36-1 El Paso Hanks this week.
In the process, coach Heather Collier’s dynamic pitching duo claimed our penultimate Big Country Preps Player of the Year award of the 2022-23 school year.

After losing the opening game of their best-of-three Region I-2A bi-district baseball series with Hamilton in extra innings, Anson knew it needed a big day from Nick Miller on Saturday at Hudson Wade Memorial Field on the campus of Abilene Christian High School.
The senior answered with a special performance in Game 2 as he both started and closed out the Tigers’ 9-5 win that forced a winner-take-all Game 3.
In the deciding game, Hamilton scored all of its runs in the top of the first and took a 17-0 win to take the series and advance to the next round against Colorado City.
A no-hitter alone is often enough to secure the Big Country Preps Player of the Week award. But when it’s backed by a solid offensive performance, it’s very difficult to get knocked off of the perch.
Brock sophomore Jesse Rusinek takes this week’s accolade after holding Eastland hitless in a 15-0 mercy rule win that saw him miss a perfect game by one walk. He fanned 12 in the process.
“He was dealin’ out there,” Brock coach Kobe Page said of the stuff Rusinek had in the Eastland game. “When he’s on, he’s pretty tough … just showing up, battling and moving the ball around the strike zone. He was ‘on.'”

ANSON — With combined totals of six errors, nine walks and five hit batsmen, it didn’t require Casey Stengal to assess that neither Hawley or Anson brought their “A” game to Tuesday’s District 6-2A matchup at AHS.
But after nearly three hours of battling for a higher spot on the league ladder, Hawley emerged as the victor, topping the Tigers 14-9.
WOLFFORTH — Playing their third game this week to go to down to the final minute, the Brock Eagles finally ran out of late-game magic Saturday in a 56-55 overtime loss to Childress in the Region I-3A championship game.
After defeating Vernon 40-36 on Monday in a region quarterfinal matchup that was tied with just over two minutes remaining and getting a bucket just before the horn to win an overtime thriller over Shallowater in Friday’s region semifinals, BHS couldn’t get a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to fall against Childress on Saturday, seeing its season end one basket short of a state tournament berth for the second consecutive year.
The 10th-ranked Eagles closed their campaign at 29-10, while the No. 5 Bobcats (27-7) earned a trip to San Antonio next week, joining Hooks, No. 2 Hitchcock and No. 7 Lytle in the Class 3A state field.

ANSON — Locked in a tight battle after the first quarter, the Anson girls exploded in the second and rode the momentum all the way to a 55-35 win over Albany as the two squads closed out the first half of District 10-2A play on Friday night.
Meagan McWhirter had a big night for the Lady Tigers, scoring a game-high 18 points, as Anson improved to 15-8 overall but, more importantly, 3-3 in league play.
Anson is tied for third place in the district after the first round of games, which is critical with the Lady Tigers having just three more home games the rest of the year.

ANSON — Two of the Big Country’s oldest rivals clashed on Friday when Haskell paid a visit to Anson, resulting in a split of a District 10-2A girls-boys varsity doubleheader.
The Haskell girls took the opener with a come-from-behind 50-41 win, after which the Anson boys earned a measure of payback, dropping Haskell 36-26 in the nightcap.

Stamford 45, Colorado City 0 — The SHS defense limited Colorado City to only 133 yards in total offense as the Bulldogs solidified their hold on the No. 3 seed.
Stamford finished with 398 yards in total offense, including 281 yards on the ground through seven different ball carriers.
After focusing on the top guards and forwards the Big Country has to offer the past two nights, it’s time to shift our attention to the paint.

Colorado City 38, Winters 8 — Mayson Monroe threw for 181 yards and two scores and Aedan Brisen rushed for 161 yards and another TD to lift C-City (1-7, 1-3) to its first win
of the year, snapping a 10-game losing streak that dated by to last season.
Hawley 60, Winters 6 — Austin Cumpton rushed for 138 yards and four scores on only 10 carries to lift Hawley to a win on the road.
The Bearcats finished with 481 yards of dual-threat offense, rushing for 220.
