Coming off a disappointing effort Friday in a 7-1 loss at Cooper, the Wylie Bulldogs team were hoping a quick turnaround would allow them to move past that one and back into the win column when they hosted Lubbock Monterey on Saturday.
Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, things didn’t quite work out that way.
Instead, the Plainsmen came to Bulldog Field and left with a 4-3 win in extra innings, pushing Wylie from first to third in the District 4-5A standings. The Bulldogs, who fell to 12-7-1 overall and 6-3 in league play, now trail co-leaders Lubbock Cooper and Abilene High, both 7-3 in district, by a half-game at the midway point of their district season.
The Abilene High baseball team is finding its groove in a wide-open District 4-5A race at the right time.
Saturday’s 4-0 win over Lubbock High at Blackburn Field capped a 3-0 week for the Warbirds, who moved into a first-place tie with Lubbock Cooper in the district standings after Wylie lost 4-3 to Lubbock Monterey in extra innings across town.
AHS beat Cooper 6-0 on Tuesday in the Crosstown Showdown before a thrilling 3-1 road win over Monterey on Friday night.

Behind an outstanding pitching performance by junior Diana Silva and an aggressive effort at the plate and on the basepaths, the Abilene High softball team picked up a big District 4-5A win over Wylie on Friday at Bulldog Field.
Fueled by an 11-hit performance off WHS’ pitching tandem of Reese Farrar and Rylee Moore, the Lady Eagles scored two runs in the first and three in the third before breaking the game open with a six-run fifth to pull away for an 11-3 victory and into a second-place tie with the Lady Bulldogs at 5-2 in the 4-5A standings.
That run support proved far more than needed for Silva, who held Wylie to just six hits and two earned runs in a complete-game effort to even the season series against the Lady Bulldogs at 1-1.
