Abilene High loses QB, game at Tascosa

Abilene High’s opener at Amarillo Tascosa proved tough on multiple fronts as the Eagles lost their starting quarterback and the game Friday at Dick Bivins Stadium.

A first-quarter touchdown was all the offense AHS could muster in a 13-7 loss to the Rebels that saw junior quarterback Eric Abbe forced from action in the second quarter when he was rolled up on on a scramble.

The Eagles threatened late, driving deep into Tascosa territory in the waning minutes, but a turnover on downs ended their hopes of a comeback.

Roan’s Cooper debut spoiled by Keller

Friday night was a learning experience for new Cooper head coach Aaron Roan, who made his debut after a July promotion from being the team’s defensive coordinator.

His first game leading the Cougars didn’t exactly go as planned as Cooper was beaten 41-15 by Class 6A Keller on Friday at Shotwell Stadium.

After the game, Roan said he learned a few things as the head coach that he will be able to improve on.

“There were a lot of adverse situations that may come up and the whole experience is new,” Roan said. “I learned from all of it.”

Brock dominates Brownwood in season opener

BROWNWOOD — If anything can spoil the debut of a new coach and a visit on your home turf from Fox Sports Southwest, it’s the 10-1 defense of the Brock Eagles.

True to form, top-ranked Brock all-but stymied Brownwood in a 41-10 win at Gordon Wood Stadium in the Big Country Preps Game of the Week, handing first-year Lions coach Sammy Burnett a loss in his opener.

Toby Morrison rushed for 116 yards and two scores while Tripp Jones threw for 165 yards and three more TDs to lift Brock (1-0), which limited Brownwood to 155 yards in total offense.

Red zone struggles cost Wylie in loss to Georgetown

Missed opportunities in Georgetown territory proved too much to overcome for Wylie on Friday in a 31-7 season-opening loss to the Eagles at Bulldog Stadium.

After taking a 7-6 first-quarter lead on a 97-yard kickoff return by Jaden Speegle, Wylie saw six trips past the 50, including three inside the Eagle 25, result in zero points. That allowed Georgetown to take a 13-7 lead into halftime and take control of the game with scoring drives on the first two possessions of the second half.
