BCP Podcast No. 40: Evan, Daniel talk Cisco baseball with Mark Adams

In his time as the Cisco baseball coach, Mark Adams has built the Loboes into a consistent winner. Sitting at 11-2 after a win over Comanche on Tuesday, this year is no different.

Earlier this week, Adams took a few minutes to chat with Big Country Preps’ Evan Ren and Daniel Youngblood about this year’s team, the sustained success of the Cisco athletic program and some keys to playoff success in this week’s Capital Farm Credit Wednesday Night Podcast.

Also in this episode, Evan and Daniel discuss some of the top developments and storylines of the Big Country baseball and softball season.

GAME STORY: Clyde’s Laughlin outduels Jim Ned’s Tant

CLYDE — Jim Ned’s Landon Tant was coming off a no-hitter in his last appearance, but it was Clyde’s Payton Laughlin who had the electric stuff at Bulldog Field on Tuesday night.

Laughlin took a no-hitter into the third inning before yielding his first hit and had seven strikeouts in a dominant performance as Clyde took a 2-0 win in District 5-3A play to create a first place tie in the district standings.

Big Country Preps Player of the Week: Hermleigh’s Gonzales takes the top spot

Hermleigh junior Makia Gonzales is no stranger to Player of the Week awards. But Big Country sports fans are more accustomed to seeing her snag the accolade on the basketball court, where she is notably one of the area’s best best players.

Surprise, surprise, she’s not all about hoops.

BCP Podcast No. 39: Evan, Daniel talk to Yeager about decision to leave De Leon

After posting a 52-23 record in seven successful seasons at De Leon, coach David Yeager announced his decision last week to resign as the Bearcats football coach to more closely follow his son Kevin’s collegiate career at Incarnate Word.

This week, Yeager took some time to chat with Big Country Preps’ Evan Ren and Daniel Youngblood about what went into that decision and what the future holds for him and his family in this week’s Capital Farm Credit Wednesday Night Podcast.

Also in this episode, Evan and Daniel discuss last week’s Big Country baseball and softball action and highlight the teams that are getting mentioned in statewide polls.

Big Country Preps Player of the Week: Comanche’s Beck takes the top spot

It was a big week for Comanche athletics, and our Big Country Preps Player of the Week column reflects it, beginning with our top spot.

Kendel Beck, a powerlifter in the 275-pound class, lands in this week’s spotlight after winning a Division 3 state championship over the weekend.

Beck, who along with fellow senior Kade Mercer (ninth place in 181-pound class) represented the Indians at the Taylor County Expo Center, won the 275-pound class with a three-lift total of 1,785 pounds.

This included a 700-pound squat, a 460-pound bench and a 625-pound dead lift.

“Great kid, great competitor,” coach Marty Wyatt said. “Truly an honor to coach him.”

GAME STORY: Clyde girls solidify district lead with crucial win over C-City

CLYDE — It took the better part of six innings and some late Colorado City miscues, but the Clyde Lady Bulldogs cemented their status as the team to beat in District 5-3A with an 8-0 win on Tuesday.

Kaitlyn Turner tossed a five-hit shutout with eight strikeouts and Peyton Lee was 2-for-4 with two runs scored to lead Clyde 16-4, 5-0, which took sole possession of first place with the win.

BIG COUNTRY PREPS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Hawley’s George takes the top spot

Generally, an individual state championship will trump virtually any other performance at the local level in this column.

And this week, three of our nominees did exactly that, so you can imagine our dilemma in choosing our Player of the Week.

At the end of the day, it was Hawley powerlifter Britney George, who won the Class 2A state title in the 181-pound class with a performance for the ages.

Big Country Preps Player of the Week: Abilene High ace ‘K-Wash’ nabs award

For the second week in a row, a standout softball pitcher has earned the title of Big Country Preps Player of the Week.

This time, it’s Abilene High senior Kaylen Washington.

“K-Wash,” as she is referred to by coaches and teammates, continued what’s been a dominating season in District 3-6A wins over Hurst Bell (7-0) and San Angelo Central (6-1), helping the Lady Eagles (14-1-2 overall) stay perfect in league play at 3-0.

Big Country Preps Player of the Week: Brownwood senior Ellett tosses two no-nos to take award

No-hitters are fairly common in fastpitch softball, but they are to be respected, nonetheless — especially when someone throws two of them in one week.

Chyanne Ellett, Brownwood’s senior ace who has been among the area’s top hurlers since her freshman year, accomplished the feat last week in a 5-0 win over Chisholm trail and a 1-0 loss to Granbury that saw GHS pitcher Alison Been match Ellett’s no-no with one of her own.

Big Country Preps Player of the Week: Eastland’s Foster snags the award

Softball and baseball are officially here. And cold weather or not, we’re already seeing performances worthy of consideration here.

Case in point: Eastland’s Brynna Foster, our Big Country Preps Player of the Week for the week ending Feb. 23.

Foster, who is only a junior, tossed four shutouts in last week’s Stephenville tournament to help the Lady Mavs improve to 10-2.

Big Country Preps Player of the Week: Hermleigh’s Roemisch takes this week’s accolade

While the Hermleigh girls basketball team has garnered much of the media’s attention in recent years, there’s a subtle little secret leaking from the HHS campus: The guys aren’t so bad either.

As of this week, the Hermleigh boys are 20-7 overall following back-to-back wins over Loraine (80-53) and Anton (70-65) — helped in no small part by our Big Country Preps Player of the Week, junior guard Kobe Roemisch.

GAME STORY: Merkel sweeps Clyde in District 5-3A action

MERKEL — It’s not very often that the pupil gets the upper hand when taking on his teacher for the first time.

That theory gave credence to the thought that Clyde coach Marc Case might be able to lead his squad to an important District 5-3A win over Merkel on Friday at Badger Gymnasium.

Instead, B.C. Lee’s Badger squad pulled away late for a 42-33 win, spoiling any hope Case had of picking up a victory over his former player from Cooper.

The game was the first time in Case’s storied career that he ever faced off against one of his former players, and the two coaches shared a lengthy postgame embrace that had both talking about their love for their counterpart.

Evan Ren’s 2018 Big Country True Grit Team

Most high school football teams have that one player acknowledged by the coaching staff as the prime example of what a teammate should be.

He’s the guy who seldom misses any practice time and is a regular in the weight room. He’s early to arrive. He’s late to leave and takes pride in being coachable, though he seldom needs direction.

He always sets the right example for younger players. He doesn’t complain and, above all else, he’s tough enough to make all the aforementioned traits consistently possible.

Know someone like that? Here is where they are honored.

DANIEL YOUNGBLOOD: This week in Big Country boys basketball (Jan. 6-12)

With league races either underway or starting this week for all Big Country boys districts, we’ve hit the most important stretch of the regular season. Virtually all games from this point forward have heightened importance, and an upset win or unexpected loss can have a major impact on teams’ postseason hopes or seeding.

As will be the case every week from now until the playoffs, we have a number of important games to look forward to and back on, and a bunch of major storylines developing. So without wasting anymore time, let’s take our weekly look at the area boys basketball landscape.

Top Upcoming Matchups: You can’t beat a meeting of district unbeatens, and that’s just what we’ll get Tuesday when Wall visits Ballinger for an important District 4-3A clash. Objectively speaking, the Bearcats (13-9 overall, 2-0 district) are a heavy underdog to the No. 13 Hawks (19-3, 3-0), but they’re on their home floor and have plenty to gain with an upset win.

Merkel rally falls short against Holliday in Eula Holiday Classic third-place game

The Merkel boys rallied a couple of times in the fourth quarter to pull within two possessions of a stout Holliday squad, but ultimately the Eagles were too much for the Badgers in a 46-35 win in the Eula Holiday Classic third-place game.

Trailing 28-15 at halftime and 33-25 heading into the final period, coach B.C. Lee’s team trimmed the deficit to five points (36-31) at the 6:43 mark and to six (41-35) with 2:36 to play. But Holliday answered both runs with one of their own to finish 3-1 at the Classic and improve to 9-4 on the season.

Eula Holiday Classic girls roundup Day 2

The championship game of the Eula Holiday Classic this year is going to be quite the doozy.

Eula, which entered the tournament ranked 15th in Class 1A, will be taking on Class 2A’s fourth-ranked Haskell after the two squads posted semifinal wins on Friday.

The Lady Pirates, who defeated Tolar 56-46 in the quarterfinals Thursday night, downed Christoval 52-41 in Friday’s semifinals to earn their spot in the title game, while the Maidens topped Class 3A No. 17 Colorado City (51-42) and Class 1A No. 12 Hermleigh (57-41) on Friday advance. Eula and Haskell will meet at 5:20 p.m. Saturday to decide the tournament’s championship.

Eula Holiday Classic boys roundup Day 2

The second day of the Eula Holiday Classic saw several Big Country boys teams fall short of their championship aspirations on Friday afternoon.

The host Pirates, Colorado City and Jim Ned all lost in the quarterfinals, while Merkel fell in the semifinals.

The Badgers, who beat Childress 65-61 in the quarterfinals Thursday before losing 41-32 to Tolar in Friday’s semifinals, will now face Holliday in the third-place game at 4 p.m. Saturday and are guaranteed the best finish of any area boys team.

Eula Holiday Classic girls roundup Day 1

The Eula girls basketball team picked up a pair of wins over Clyde and Tolar on Thursday to move into this afternoon’s semifinals of the annual Eula Holiday Classic.

Eula had an opening round 46-34 win over Clyde before closing the opening day’s action by knocking off the Lady Rattlers 56-46.

The Lady Pirates will be joined in the semifinals by Christoval, a 50-49 quarterfinal winner over Eastland.

Eastland started the tournament with a 15-point win over Ballinger (41-26) before the narrow loss.

Christoval scored eight points in the final minute — including a buzzer-beater to win — to rally from a seven-point deficit to win.

Eastland coach Patrick Blount was disappointed in the final score, but said it didn’t change anything that his team had done all day.

Eula Holiday Classic boys roundup Day 1

The opening day of the annual Eula Holiday Classic got off to a high-scoring start on Thursday with several close games and others that were more lopsided.

Holliday, Childress, Martins Mill and Jim Ned were the top-scoring squads in the first round of the tournament, advancing to the championship side of the 16-team tournament.

The Eagles rolled to an easy 90-32 win over Breckenridge in the day’s fourth game, while the Bobcats followed up with an 89-37 mauling of Brady.

Martins Mill had no issues in posting an 83-36 win over Early in the final game of the opening round.

While not putting up as many points as those three, Jim Ned had the most stifling defensive effort of the day in a 76-30 win over Christoval.

The host Pirates opened the day’s action with a 43-30 win over Eastland and then fell 47-46 Thursday night in the quarterfinals in a thriller against Tolar. The Rattlers were in the quarterfinals after a 60-36 win over Clyde earlier in the day.

This week in girls basketball (Dec. 23-29)

Top Upcoming Matchups: With teams across Texas enjoying a five-day holiday break, this week’s Big Country action doesn’t begin until Dec. 27. And nowhere in the area will things get more heated than in the 16-team bracket in the always-tough Eula Holiday Classic.

Several of the Big Country’s top small-school girls teams will take part in the event, including fourth-ranked Class 2A Haskell (15-1) and an uber-athletic, albeit unranked team from Stamford (13-6).

No. 19 Colorado City (12-3) will be there, as will other Class 3A toughies from Merkel (14-8), Eastland (12-4) and Ballinger (11-7).

This week in boys basketball (Dec. 23-29)

Top Upcoming Matchups: With teams enjoying a mandatory five-day break for the holidays, we’ve got a back-loaded schedule this week. But that’s not to say it’s an uninteresting one.

In fact, with holiday tournaments scheduled throughout the state, including a few right here in the Big Country, it is anything but.

Headlining that list are the Eula Holiday Classic, Brownwood’s Texas Bank Holiday Classic and the Anson Lions Club Holiday Tournament, which combined will feature more than 20 Big Country boys basketball teams.

BCP Podcast No. 22: Evan, Daniel look ahead to football playoffs

The Regular season is over, and the high school football playoffs are here. In this week’s Capital Farm Credit Wednesday Night Podcast, Big Country Preps’ Evan Ren and Daniel Youngblood take a look back at the most important games of Week 11 and ahead to the postseason, focusing on the Big Country’s biggest threats.

Evan Ren’s 2018-19 Big Country Boys Hoops Preview

While several of the area’s best athletes are still tied up playing football, the boys basketball season technically gets underway Friday night.

Of course, as the football playoffs get rolling and more and more teams are eliminated, the basketball talent pool will grow on a weekly basis, and by mid December, we’ll be in full hoops mode.

Regardless, boys basketball season is officially here, so it’s time to take a peek at what this season will offer with our area teams, Class 1A through 4A.

Who has the best shot at getting to state? Who are the legitimate contenders and what are the teams that we should be careful not to ignore?

Let’s find out.

BCP GAME OF THE WEEK: Jim Ned clashes with Eastland (w/ Evan Ren’s Big Country Picks, Thursday Night Drive-Time Podcast)

LAST WEEK: 28-3, .903

SEASON TOTAL: 351-79, .816

Our possible choices for Big Country Preps Game of the Week made our final selection difficult this time around, with two high-profile winner-take-all district title games on the menu.

Our final pick: Jim Ned (7-2, 3-1) at Eastland (7-2, 3-1) — a matchup with a bit less at stake (the No. 2 seed in District 3-3A Division I), but one we feel will be the area’s most competitive of our top six games.

BCP Podcast No. 21: Evan, Daniel talk Hamlin football with Russell Lucas

Hamlin football coach Russell Lucas has built a consistent winner in his 11 years at the school. And sitting at 9-0 heading into a winner-take-all district championship game against Albany, this year’s team may be the best he’s ever had.

Lucas recently took some time to talk to Big Country Preps’ Evan Ren and Daniel Youngblood about this year’s team, the qualities that make it special and the importance he places on character and community involvement for this week’s Capital Farm Credit Wednesday Night Podcast.

Also in this episode, Evan and Daniel discuss the biggest football games of Week 10 and what they mean for the Big Country’s various district championship and playoff races.

District 3-3A Division I: Week 10 Report

Mason Fuchs

Wall 28, Breckenridge 22 Mason Fuchs hit Mason Kindle with a 53-yard scoring pass with just 2:16 to play to lift the Hawks to a come-from-behind win over the visiting Buckaroos.

Chase Rios led Wall with 128 yards rushing and one touchdown. Breck (3-6, 1-3) got 137 yards rushing and a score from Angel Ruiz.

Wall (6-2, 4-0) locked up the district title with the win. Breck can still take the No. 4 seed with a win over Clyde next week.

Evan Ren’s 2018-19 Big Country Girls Hoops Preview

The quickest way to get basketball season to begin is to tee up a football.

It might as well set off a time warp.

If you don’t believe me, consider this while you’re watching a Week 10 football game around the area this evening: High school girls basketball officially begins tonight and the boys will tip off next week.

Excuse me, but weren’t two-a-days over like …. just last week? Unbelievable.

Regardless, the girls start Friday night and that means it’s time to take a look around the Big Country for some of the top teams the area will have to offer in 2018-19.

Dublin (7-1, 2-1) at Comanche (5-3, 3-0) — This game has been circled on the calendar for weeks and had been viewed as a possible winner-take-all matchup in District 6-3A Division II.

BCP Podcast No. 20: Evan, Daniel chat with Comanche’s Stephen Hermesmeyer

Comanche football coach Stephen Hermesmeyer has turned a struggling Indian program into a perennial playoff contender during his seven seasons at the school. And though he experienced significant graduation losses from last year’s 12-2 squad, his Indians can clinch their second straight district title with a win over Dublin on Friday.

Hermesmeyer recently took some time to chat with Big Country Preps’ Evan Ren and Daniel Youngblood about this year’s team, his wing-T offensive scheme and the status of his program for this week’s Capital Farm Credit Wednesday Night Podcast.

Also in this episode, Evan and Daniel discuss the area’s top games from Week 9 and how those outcomes are shaping the Big Country district races.

District 3-3A Division I: Week 9 Report

Wall 41, Eastland 21  Wall used a dominating defensive effort and 316 yards rushing to hand Eastland a 20-point loss, limiting the Mavericks to 134 total yards, including just 36 yards rushing.

Chase Rios rushed for 153 yards and three scores to lift the Hawks (5-2, 3-0), who overcame a 21-20 deficit with three straight fourth-quarter touchdowns.

BCP Game of the Week: Stephenville heads to Brownwood (w/ Evan Ren’s Big Country Picks, Drive-Time Podcast)

LAST WEEK: 33-7, .825

SEASON TOTAL: 285-71, .801

In a week that features four or perhaps five games that could easily qualify for our Big Country Preps Game of the Week, there is alas, a safe choice.

When in doubt, one can seldom go wrong with the annual Stephenville-Brownwood clash — a storied feud now in its 80th chapter dating back to 1937.

This year, the Lions (4-2, 1-0) play host to the Yellow Jackets (4-3, 1-1) in a game that will likely decide the No. 2 seed in District 5-4A Division I — perhaps the best overall 4A league in Texas.

BCP Podcast No. 19: Sammy Burnett talks Brownwood football with Evan, Daniel

Having spent his high school years playing for a pair of coaching legends at Brownwood, Sammy Burnett’s professional dream was always to return to his alma mater as the head football coach.

Burnett, who realized that dream when he was announced as the Lions coach in February, took some time to chat with Big Country Preps’ Evan Ren and Daniel Youngblood about “the Brownwood way,” how he was influenced by coaches Gordon Wood and Randy Allen and what he wants to build at his alma mater in this week’s Capital Farm Credit Wednesday Night Podcast.

Also on this episode, Evan and Daniel discuss the top developments from Week 8 and where it leaves the Big Country’s football teams with three weeks remaining in the regular season.

Big Country Preps Player of the Week: Cisco QB Witt takes the accolade

Having covered Big Country athletics since 2006, I can, with a good degree of accuracy, say that it is rare for a Cisco football player to win a Player of the Week accolade.

There are two reasons for this: Cisco has not only been very good under coach Brent West, but they’ve been merciful in the process — often pulling their starters early to avoid embarrassing the opposition.

This makes it difficult for a CHS player to crack our Top 10, much less take the top spot.

Nonetheless, it does happen, upon occasion and Friday night is an example of it.

Senior quarterback Cooper Witt, despite being pulled after one series in the third quarter, snags our Big Country Preps Player of the Week for the week ending Oct. 20 after leading the Loboes to a 68-0 win over San Angelo Grape Creek.

District 3-3A Division I: Week 8 Report

Eastland 44, Breckenridge 41 — Behren Morton threw for 217 yards and two scores and kicked the game-winning field goal to lead Eastland in a come-from-behind win over Breckenridge.

Trailing 13-0 after one quarter, Eastland (6-1. 2-0) rallied with 21 straight points through the second quarter.

The seesaw battle was tied at 41 following a 22-yard TD run by Breck’s Angel Ruiz in the fourth quarter. But Morton’s go-ahead field goal from 32 yards as time expired put the game away.

BCP Game of the Week: C-City hosts Idalou (w/ Evan Ren’s Big Country picks, Drive-Time Podcast)

Evan Ren

LAST WEEK: 37-5, .860

SEASON TOTAL: 252-64, .797

Before the season, many viewed Colorado City (6-0, 1-0) as the odds-on favorite to take District 2-3A Division II, and I agreed with them.

But as each new season evolves, surprises typically emerge and that’s certainly the case in this league where Idalou (5-1, 1-0) and Abernathy (5-1, 1-0) have shown themselves as too good to simply label as No. 2 or 3 seeds.
