GAME STORY: Greathouse’s late bucket fuels Big Spring boys to thrilling win at Snyder

SNYDER — Tied with Snyder after his technical foul allowed the Tigers to even things up with just over 40 seconds remaining Tuesday, Big Spring guard Gavin Greathouse could have allowed that momentary lapse to be his final impression on the game. 

Instead, the senior followed the miscue with one of the biggest shots of his career. 

With the game still deadlocked more than 30 seconds later, Greathouse dribbled himself free for a 17-foot jumper that hit nothing but net on the way down, giving the Steers a 46-44 lead with 4.4 seconds remaining. And after a series of timeouts, the Big Spring defense did the rest, securing a win by the same score to complete a doubleheader sweep at Tiger Gym.

CAPITAL FARM CREDIT/BCP PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Dublin’s Teten earns honor with historic effort

With a huge passing game in Dublin’s 41-35 area-round win over Palmer, junior Chris Teten put up numbers worthy of our Capital Farm Credit/Big Country Preps Player of the Week award.

But it’s only once you grasp the historical significance of the Lions’ win over the Bulldogs on Friday that you gain a full appreciation for the junior’s performance.

In hitting 19 of 26 passes for 406 yards and six touchdowns — all of which were needed to escape Joshua’s Owl Stadium with a victory — Teten was objectively excellent behind center for the Lions. Now for the kicker: the win over Palmer marked the first area-round victory in the history of the Dublin program, which is significant considering the school has been playing football for more than a century.

CAPITAL FARM CREDIT/BCP PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Hico sophomore Booth earns the spotlight

Big numbers will generally get one strong consideration for our Capital Farm Credit/Big Country Preps Player of the Week award. But when those numbers come against a team from a much larger classification, it quickly makes us take notice. 

Class 2A Hico’s Grace Booth did exactly that last week in a 61-57 win over Class 4A Mineral Wells, dominating both ends of the floor to lead the Lady Tigers in their season opener. 

Aside from the 40 points she poured in, Booth snagged 10 rebounds to chart a double-double. She also forced multiple turnovers (viewable on the video above), including three steals.

Class 4A bi-district report: Lambert perfect as Stephenville routs Dunbar

DIVISION I

Stephenville 49, Fort Worth Dunbar 21 — Ryder Lambert was a perfect 20 of 20 through the air for 373 yards and five scores to lift the Yellow Jackets to a bi-district win over Dunbar. 

Lambert, who rushed for 14 yards and an additional touchdown, connected with Coy Eakin seven times for 213 yards and two TDs.

The Jackets (11-0) finished with 505 yards in total offense, with 108 coming on the ground.

District 2-4A Div. I Week 11 Report: Big Spring sees title hopes fade with upset loss to Lake View

San Angelo Lake View 49, Big Spring 35 — With a chance to clinch a share of their first district championship since 1990 thanks to Andrews’ win over Fort Stockton on Friday, the Steers couldn’t capitalize, allowing 21 fourth-quarter points in a tough loss to the Chiefs.

Big Spring (6-4, 1-2) outgained Lake View 449-427, but the Steers were hurt by a 4-2 disadvantage in the turnover margin. This allowed the Chiefs to overcome deficits of 21-14 at halftime and 28-21 in the third quarter and win the game with a 21-7 run through the final period.

Quarterback Gabriel Baeza led the Steers with 389 yards and four touchdowns passing to go with 46 yards and another score rushing, while Kaegen Mitchell had a huge day catching the ball (15-203, 2 TDs).

District 2-4A Div. I Week 10 Report: Andrews routs Lake View, Fort Stockton holds off Big Spring

Andrews 45, San Angelo Lake View 24 — The Mustangs kept their hopes of a shared district title alive with a comfortable road win over the Chiefs.

Coming off a lopsided home loss to Big Spring, Andrews (3-6, 1-1) raced out to a 16-0 lead after a quarter and increased its advantage to 38-8 in the second quarter to put the game away by halftime.

Led by quarterback EJ Lopez, who passed for 136 yards and two TDs, and running back Jaxon Lawdermilk, who rushed for a pair of scores, the Mustangs only had 313 yards of total offense. But they held Lake View () to just 261 yards and intercepted Lake View QBs Cade Henry and Jacob Chappa a combined  four times.

GAME STORY: Steers fall to Fort Stockton in heartbreaking fashion

BIG SPRING — Gunning for their first district championship since 1990, the Big Spring Steers had the ball in senior quarterback Gabriel Baeza’s hands with 1:44 to play and 99 yards to cover for the game-winning touchdown Friday against Fort Stockton.

Baeza, who started the night with a school-record 18 consecutive completions, did everything in his power to will his team to victory. He started the drive with 34 yards rushing and 21 yards passing to put the Steers in position for a potential game-winning Hail Mary.

With eight seconds to go and facing fourth down at the Fort Stockton 49, Baeza rolled left and avoided two sacks while waiting on a receiver to get open. He then uncorked a deep bomb off his back foot for Sa’quan Fizer, who had gotten behind the Panthers secondary.

The ball glanced off Fizer’s fingertips and fell to the turf as time expired, allowing Fort Stockton to escape with a 29-28 win at Memorial Stadium in a key District 2-4A Division I matchup.

CAPITAL FARM CREDIT/BCP PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Sweetwater QB Holsey snags this week’s accolade

It’s never a surprise to see Sweetwater senior quarterback Leo Holsey among the top performers in our Capital Farm Credit/Big Country Preps Player of the Week column. 

Since his freshman year, the four-year starter has topped our weekly list multiple times, including this week after helping Sweetwater to a 61-37 win over Pecos on Friday. 

Holsey only threw 15 passes, but he connected on 12 of them for 364 yards and five touchdowns. He also rushed six times for 75 yards and two more scores, giving him a direct hand in 439 yards and seven TDs.

District 2-4A Div. I Week 9 Report: Baeza fuels Big Spring to impressive win over Andrews

Big Spring 48, Andrews 19 — Gabriel Baeza made a triumphant return to the Steers lineup, passing for 404 yards and five touchdowns and rushing for an additional 87 yards to lift coach Cannon McWilliams squad to a district-opening rout of the Mustangs.

Baeza, who missed Big Spring’s nondistrict finale against Pampa (a 58-7 loss), rallied the Steers (6-2, 1-0) from down 19-14 at halftime with four unanswered touchdowns to start the second half. And backup Gavin Padron led a scoring drive at the end to cap the thorough victory.

Kaegen Mitchell (12-132, 2 TDs receiving) and Eli Cobos (8-110, 3 TDs) were Baeza’s favorite targets in the passing game, while Cobos also threw a scoring pass to kick off the scoring in the first quarter. Defensively, the Steers limited Andrews (2-6, 0-1) to 360 yards and intercepted Mustangs quarterback EJ Lopez four times.

BIG COUNTRY PREPS GAME OF THE WEEK: Cisco to battle Coleman with top seed in the balance (w/ Evan Ren’s Big Country Picks)

This week’s Big Country Preps Game of the Week will send me south to historic Hufford Field in Coleman, where the Bluecats (6-0) will play host to perennial power Cisco (6-1) in what is essentially the District 4-2A Division I championship.

Opened way back in 1934, Hufford is one of the Big Country’s oldest and most unique venues and if you are looking for a game to go to on Friday, this one will not only offer some good football, but some nostalgia as well.

The immense rock wall surrounding the field was built in 1940 by the Works Progress Administration or WPA as the nation battled its way out of The Great Depression.

CAPITAL FARM CREDIT/BCP PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jim Ned’s Wishert claims the top spot

It’s one thing to rush for more than 300 yards and three scores against a struggling program. We see that all the time from the area’s top running backs. 

But it’s an entirely different thing when those yards come against a solid team with a sturdy defense. That’s earning it the hard way.

Jim Ned’s Xavier Wishert, our Capital Farm Credit/Big Country Preps Player of the Week, took that route on Friday night when he charted 313 yards rushing and three scores on just 20 carries in a 37-20 road win over the Wall Hawks.

BIG COUNTRY PREPS GAME OF THE WEEK: Roscoe travels to Ralls for crucial district game (w/ Evan Ren’s Big Country Picks)

I ask the same question, or some variant of it virtually every year. We just finished with two-a-days. How can we possibly be this deep in the season so quickly?

Yet hear we are. A cold weather snap approaching. Thanksgiving right around the corner —as are the playoffs.

This week’s Game of the Week will see me traveling north to Ralls where the surprising Roscoe Plowboys, off to their best start in years, will be in a showdown for the district lead.

The column hit at 85 percent accuracy last week and is now up to 82 percent on the year. So we’ll see if we can keep the momentum going through the home stretch.
