LOCAL TRACK ROUNDUP: Wylie’s Washington earns silver in boys triple jump to punch ticket to state meet

LUBBOCK — Wylie senior Andre Washington is headed to the state track meet after taking silver in the triple jump over the weekend at the Region I-5A meet at Lowrey Field.

Washington jumped 46 feet, 10½ inches to finish less than a foot behind event winner Taniela Ake O’Neal of Argyle (47-9½) and punch his ticket to Austin.

That effort, which accounted for eight of Wylie’s 12 team points, headlined all local performances at the meet, which also saw the Abilene High girls earn 11 points.

In addition to Washington’s big effort, the Wylie boys also got points from Ethan Hoffman in the shot put. The senior had a best throw of 52-8, narrowly missing the medal stand with a fourth-place finish.

Other top performances from Wylie boys included a seventh-place finish from Carter Bearden in the pole vault (13-6) and ninth-place efforts by Gage Heighten in the 100 (11.13) and 200 (21.48) and by Cade Burk in the discus (143-8).

Abilene High’s top finishes on the boys side came from John Alcantar in the 1,600 and 3,200. The AHS senior placed eighth in the mile in a time of 4:33.96 and took ninth in the two mile with a time of 10:04.70.

Cooper, meanwhile, had two boys qualifiers, with Peyton Ewing’s 14-place finish in the long jump (20-1½) marking the Cougars’ best finish.

On the girls side, Abilene High had four entries place, headlined by fourth-place finishes by Zoe Vann in the 1,600 and Mason Murray in the 3,200.

Vann ran a 5:10.64 in the mile to finish two spots ahead of Murray, who ran a sixth-place time of 5:19.56 in that race to place in two events.

Murray earned her fourth-place finish in the 3,200 with a time of 11:36.52.

The AHS girls also got a sixth-place finish from their 1,600 relay team of Abigail Johnson, Aubrey Duran, Elizah Willis and Vann, who combined to run a 4:04.87. 

Vann also competed in the 800, placing 13th in a time of 1:01.40.

Wylie got its best girls finish from its 800 relay team of Kide Modi, Mille Modi, Brin Heuerman and Taelyn Badgett-Hays, which placed seventh in a time of 1:47.42.

The Lady Bulldogs also got an eighth-place finish from Kate Powell in the discus (116-3) and a ninth-place showing from Thereza Enduki in the 300 hurdles (48.16).

Cooper’s Asharee Davis, meanwhile, placed ninth in the long jump (17-1¾) and 11th in the triple jump (35-1½).
