Football is just around the corner, and we at BigCountryPreps.com are committed to bringing you the information you need to prepare for your favorite team’s season.
We’ll be releasing our Big Country Preps Preseason Football Preview, the most comprehensive look at the upcoming Big Country football season anywhere, on Wednesday, Aug. 16. But you won’t have to wait until then to sate your gridiron appetite.
Leading up to the first day of fall football practice on July 31, we’ll be spotlighting each 11-man team in the area and posing some of the key questions they’ll face in 2023 as part of our annual “Countdown to Two-a-Days” series.
We continue in Class 2A Division II with the Cross Plains Buffaloes. On Friday we will take a look at the Hamlin Pied Pipers, followed by the Roscoe Plowboys on Saturday.
CROSS PLAINS BUFFALOES
LAST YEAR’S RECORD
- 7-4 overall, 2-3 in District 6-2A Division II
ONE KEY STAT
- The Buffaloes reached the playoffs for the eighth consecutive season last year, but their bi-district loss to Wink marked their sixth first-round loss in as many years.
TWO NAMES TO KNOW
- Senior RB/LB Dusty Wyatt (Rushed for 261 yards and 8 touchdowns, received for 267 yards and 2 TDs and had 52 tackles and 2 interceptions in 2022)
- Senior WR/DB Asher Moses (Rushed for 118 yards and 2 touchdowns and received for 224 yards and 2 TDs in 2022)
THREE BURNING QUESTIONS
- How much progress can we expect to see from junior quarterback Kade Purvis, who is now in his third year as a starter?
- With 16 returning lettermen, a fair number of whom are two-way starters, can Cross Plains develop enough depth to compete at the top of a tough district?
- The Buffs return big and experienced lines on both sides of the football, but who will emerge as their playmakers at the skill positions?
