CAPITAL FARM CREDIT/BCP PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Morris takes this week’s award

With our Capital Farm Credit-Big Country Preps Player of the Week shut down due to weather last week, we have extended our list of eligible nominees back two weeks to recognize the top performances over the past 14 days. 

As a result, Westbrook’s Kenan Morris tops our list and takes this week’s award. 

Morris, who dropped in 18 points in a district finale against Ira, lifted the Wildcats to their 22nd straight league win in the process. A few days later, he poured in 22 points to bo with eight boards and three assists in a warmup game with No. 17  Lingleville. 

BIG COUNTRY TOP 10

1. Morgan Travis, guard, Sr., Wylie — Had a huge game in her final high school game, posting a double-double of 27 points and 10 steals in the Lady Bulldogs’ 72-69 bi-district loss to Amarillo Tascosa on Feb. 11 at Lubbock Christian High School.

Travis also added four rebounds and two assists as the Lady Bulldogs wrapped up their season at 13-13.

2. Stephen Bird and Layne Edgar, guards, seniors, Cisco — Both scored 17 points in last week’s bi-district win over Quanah.

Bird finished with six boards, nine assists and three steals. Edgar chipped in seven boards, three assists and three steals.

“This was our most complete game as a team, total team effort, total unselfishness, and several kids making big after big play to lead us to a playoff win.”

3. Zach Miller, post, Sr., Snyder — Led the Tigers to a 40-38 bi-district win over Perryton with 13 points and nine rebounds.

The Tigers enter this week at 15-8.

4. Isabella Segura, forward, Jr., Gorman — Tallied 42 combined points in a 59-25 win over Three-Way and losses to Lingleville (45-37) and Strawn (65-55).

Along the way, she charted 23 boards, seven assists and 13 steals.

5. Taelon Sorrells, forward, Sr., Comanche — Averaged 16 points and 7.6 rebounds last week in 3 games leading Comanche to the playoffs in wins over Millsap 54-46, Eastland 49-41, and Early 55-51.

“Taelon is a leader for this team and works extremely hard on the court and in the classroom,” coach Richard Pringle said.

6. Jalen Cherry, forward, Jr., Cooper — Hit four big 3-pointers on his way to a game-high 17 points in a 58-46 district-championship clinching win over Lubbock Cooper on Feb. 10 at Cougar Gym.

That victory clinched the Cougars a share of their first league title since 1996, and CHS (16-6) earned the outright title when they’re season finale at Lubbock Monterey was canceled due to weather.

7. Miguel Martinez, point guard, So., Comanche — Averaged 15.3 points per game last week along with 3.2 assists and 4.3 rebounds.

“Miguel is a leader on the court and plays extremely hard on both ends of the floor,” coach Richard Pringle said.

 8. Gabby Herrera, guard, So., Gorman — Was a model of consistency in a win over three-way, and consecutive losses to Lingleville and Strawn.

While her numbers weren’t spectacular, she contributed significantly in every game and in every area. The final tally: 28 combined points, 16 boards, 18 assists and 13 steals.

9. Noah Garcia and Jaelyn Rivera, guard/forward, Sr./So., Cooper — Also had solid games in the Cougars’ win over Lubbock Cooper, going for 14 and 10 points, respectively.

Cooper, the top playoff seed out of District 4-5A will open the playoffs against Amarillo Palo Duro at 6 p.m. Monday Night at Lubbock High.

10. Lexi Wishert and Kate Bryant, forwards, Fr./So., Jim Ned — Controlled the paint area defensively and on the glass in last week’s 48-32 win over Holliday.

Wishert scored 11 points. Espinosa added 10 to help the Lady Indians take an area title.

Gunner Pharr, guard, Sr, Cisco Boys Basketball – 14 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assist and 4 steals; Tre Brackeen, forward, So, Cisco Boys Basketball – 12 points (5/6 from the field) and 13 rebounds)
