After spending the past two seasons establishing himself as one of the Big Country’s top receivers, Stephenville senior Gavin Rountree felt ready for a new challenge.
Having already proven his abilities as a playmaker, the standout wanted to do even more for his team in his final high school season. And with the graduation of two-year starter Kade Renfro creating a vacancy at the quarterback position, a window of opportunity opened for him.
An A-team quarterback himself through the ninth grade, Rountree was confident he could handle a move back to his original position. But he knew he’d have to prove that to his coaches and teammates first.
In winning a three-way battle for the spot in fall camp, he started that process. And he continued it last week, lighting up the Sweetwater defense in a 58-32 season-opening win for the Yellow Jackets.
