District 5-4A Division I: Week 8 Report

Morrison

Waco La Vega 42, Stephenville 10 — The Yellow Jackets struggled to slow the Pirate offense Friday, allowing 349 yards rushing and 537 total yards in a lopsided home loss.

Traling 14-3 at halftime, Stephenville was outscored 21-7 in the third quarter to fall to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in District 5-4A DI. The Jackets, who finished with 298 yards of offense (223 passing, 75 rushing), scored their only touchdown on a 62-yard pass from Cole Stanley to Trace Morrison, and they were already in a 28-3 hole by that point.

Up next for coach Sterling Doty’s team is a home game against archrival Brownwood, while La Vega (6-1, 1-0) will host China Spring next week.

China Spring 52, Gatesville 13 — The Cougars pounded out 436 yards on the ground Friday to snap their five-game losing streak with a blowout win over the Hornets.

China Spring (3-5, 1-1) turned a 7-0 first-quarter lead into a 35-6 advantage by halftime and cruised from there to their first district win. The Cougars limited Gatesville (0-8, 0-2) to just 126 total yards in handing the Hornets their 10th consecutive loss dating back to last season.

China Spring will try to carry the momentum from Friday’s win into its game at La Vega next week, while Gatesville will enjoy a much needed open date.

Brownwood (7-0, 1-0) — The unbeaten and sixth-ranked Lions were off Friday, giving them extra preparation time for next week’s rivalry game against Stephenville.

Coach Sammy Burnett’s squad has been nothing short of dominant to this point, outscoring its first seven opponents by a combined 262-32 margin.
