Cross Plains led 14-0 after the first quarter and increased their lead to 35-6 by halftime, ending the competitive phase of the game before the break. This concluded an impressive nondistrict run for the Buffs who will enter district play with a 5-1 record, having outscored their first six opponents by a 261-51 margin.
Coach Daniel Purvis’ squad will open 7-2A DII play next week with a big home game against Haskell, before following their Oct. 17 open date with a tough two-week stretch against Albany (Oct. 25) and Hamlin (Nov. 1).
Albany 50, Menard 6 — The Lions took care of business in their nondistrict finale, building a 37-0 halftime lead on their way to a 44-point blowout.
Sophomore running back Jaheim Newton had a big game for Albany, rushing for 177 yards and two touchdowns on just 10 carries, while quarterback Ben West completed seven of 11 passes for 100 yards and three touchdowns. Cade Neve was on the receiving end of two of those scoring throws, and B.J. Morris caught the other.
Now 4-2 on the year, the Lions will take next week off before opening district play with a home game against Roscoe.
Christoval 44, Roscoe 28 — The Plowboys rallied from a 19-0 first-quarter deficit to pull within five by halftime, but the Cougars reestablished control in the third quarter to quell any hopes of an upset.
Christoval outgained Roscoe 404-287 and won the turnover battle 4-2. This allowed the Cougars to start fast in each half and put the Plowboys on their heels.
Roscoe, which was led by quarterback Junior Martinez (11-19-2—97, 3 TDs passing; 18-95 rushing), fell to 1-4 with the loss. The Plowboys will kick off district play next week with a road trip to Hamlin.
Haskell (2-4) was outgained 459-184 and rushed for just 65 yards in the loss, which you can read more about here.
The Indians will try to snap a three-game losing streak next week when they travel to Cross Plains for their district opener.
Hamlin enters that matchup off a 39-6 loss to Stratford at Abernathy.
